Best Ecommerce Website Builder (2026): Shopify, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Wix and Square Compared

We compare five ecommerce website builders on monthly price, transaction fees, sales caps and selling tools, so you can see what a store really costs.

The monthly price on a store builder’s pricing page is rarely what you pay. On top of it come card processing, transaction fees if you use an outside payment provider, apps for features the plan leaves out, and in some cases a forced upgrade once your sales pass a threshold. The best ecommerce website builder for you is the one whose total cost still makes sense at the sales you expect next year.

We compared five builders that small online stores commonly use, on price, fees and the selling tools each plan includes.

How we chose

An online store builder needs to:

  • Take payments cleanly, with low or no extra fees on top of card processing.
  • Recover abandoned carts and send order emails automatically.
  • Handle the catalog: unlimited products, variants, inventory and discounts.
  • Ship and tax correctly, with carrier rates, labels and sales tax calculation.
  • Grow with the store without a forced jump in price or a painful migration.

We checked each vendor’s pricing and plan comparison pages. Some vendors show prices in local currency depending on where you view the page; we note where a US price comes from an earlier check. Read more about how we review.

★ Best overall for online stores

Shopify

Best for stores that plan to grow and want the widest choice of apps

From $29/mo (yearly)Visit Shopify

What we like

  • Full-featured online store on every plan, with hosting and SSL included
  • Shopify Messaging email app: abandoned cart emails, first 10,000 emails a month free
  • 24/7 live chat support on every plan
  • Sell online, on social channels and in person from one dashboard

Watch out for

  • Third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic if you do not use Shopify Payments
  • Basic includes no additional staff accounts; Grow includes 5
  • Many specialist features come from paid apps
Basic
$29/mo, billed yearly
Grow
$79/mo yearly, 5 staff accounts
Advanced
$299/mo yearly, 15 staff accounts
Trial

Shopify is built for selling first. Every plan includes a full-featured online store with hosting, unlimited bandwidth and a free SSL certificate, inventory across up to 10 locations, and one dashboard for products, orders, shipping and marketing. You can sell on social channels and in person as well as online. Shopify’s own email app, Shopify Messaging, adds abandoned cart, welcome and win-back emails, with the first 10,000 emails each month free.

Which plan to pick: Basic for a solo founder. Grow once other people need their own logins, since Basic includes no additional staff accounts. The prices here are Shopify’s yearly-billing rates; paying month to month costs more.

Watch out for: payment choice. If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. For stores created since May 12, 2025, that fee also applies to the part of an order paid with store credit or gift cards. Shopify’s pricing page showed us local currency; the US prices here come from Shopify’s own site, and you should confirm the billing term at checkout.

#2
Best built-in features

BigCommerce

Best for stores that prefer built-in features to installing many apps

What we like

  • No fee on orders through its embedded payment providers
  • More than 70 built-in discount options, plus coupons and gift cards
  • Real-time shipping quotes and a built-in blog on every plan
  • Sell on Amazon, eBay and Walmart; Feedonomics Surface ad feeds free up to 100,000 SKUs

Watch out for

  • Core is capped at $30,000 in trailing 12-month sales, then upgrades automatically
  • Abandoned cart saver and customer groups start on Growth, not Core
  • Phone support starts on Growth
Core
$39/mo, up to $30K a year
Growth
$105/mo, up to $100K a year
Scale
$399/mo ($299 billed annually)
Trial
15 days, no card

BigCommerce packs more selling features into the platform itself. Every plan includes single-page checkout, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Amazon Pay, multi-currency, real-time carrier shipping quotes, product reviews, a blog and more than 70 built-in discount options. Orders processed through its embedded payment providers carry no BigCommerce fee.

Which plan to pick: Growth for most stores that already sell. It adds the abandoned cart saver, customer groups, persistent carts, stored cards and 24/7 phone support, and covers up to $100,000 in trailing 12-month sales. Core suits a brand-new store; paying annually saves 25%.

Watch out for: sales thresholds and payment providers. When trailing 12-month sales (measured as gross order value minus 10%) pass your plan’s limit, BigCommerce upgrades you automatically. Orders through open payment providers carry a fee of 2% on Core, 1% on Growth and 0.6% on Scale.

#3
Best for design-led brands

Squarespace

Best for brands where the look of the site sells the product

From $16/mo (annual)Visit Squarespace

What we like

  • Abandoned cart recovery, unlimited products and subscriptions on every plan
  • Designer templates and a drag-and-drop editor
  • 0% online store transaction fee from the Core plan
  • 24/7 support; 14-day free trial with no card

Watch out for

  • 2% online store transaction fee on Basic
  • Discounts, shipping labels and carrier-calculated shipping need Core or higher
  • No free plan
Basic
$16/mo, billed annually
Core
$23/mo, billed annually
Plus
$39/mo, billed annually
Advanced
$99/mo, billed annually

Squarespace is known for polished designer templates, which matters for fashion, homeware, art and food brands. Every plan includes fully integrated ecommerce: unlimited products and services, subscriptions, gift cards, checkout on your own domain, abandoned cart emails, Facebook and Instagram catalog sync, and print-on-demand through Printful.

Which plan to pick: Core at $23 a month for most stores. It removes the 2% store transaction fee and adds discounts, payment plans, Google Shopping listings, UPS and USPS shipping labels, carrier-calculated shipping and ecommerce analytics.

Watch out for: Basic’s fee. The 2% online store transaction fee on Basic can cost more than the upgrade to Core once you sell a few hundred dollars a month. Squarespace’s US prices here are from our September 27, 2026 check; the pricing page showed us local currency on this check.

Wix is a general website builder with a store built in, and it suits businesses whose site does more than sell products: bookings, services, events or a blog alongside the shop. You can build the whole site on the free plan, then upgrade when you are ready to take payments.

Which plan to pick: Core is the first plan that accepts payments and includes basic eCommerce, 50 GB of storage and 5 site collaborators. Business moves you to standard eCommerce with 100 GB and 10 collaborators, and Business Elite to advanced eCommerce.

Watch out for: plan names versus features. Wix describes eCommerce as basic, standard or advanced by plan, so compare the plan details for the specific features you need, such as subscriptions or multi-currency, before you buy. The Core price is from our September 27, 2026 check.

Best free option

Square Online

Best for shops, cafes and makers already taking payments with Square

Free; paid from $49/moVisit Square Online

What we like

  • Free plan with no monthly subscription; you pay processing fees
  • Built to work with Square's in-person point of sale
  • Paid plans add loyalty, marketing and staff tools
  • 30-day free trial on Square Plus and Premium

Watch out for

  • Paid plans are priced per location
  • Built around selling and payments; check design options before you buy
  • Tied to Square payments
Square Free
$0/mo per location
Square Plus
$49/mo per location
Square Premium
$149/mo per location
Trial

If you already sell in person with Square, Square Online is the cheapest way to add an online store. The free plan has no monthly fee, and because it is Square’s own tool it is designed to work with the Square point of sale you use at the counter or at markets.

Which plan to pick: start on Square Free. Upgrade to Square Plus only if you also want Square’s loyalty, marketing and staff management tools across your business.

Watch out for: growth. Square Online is a quick, low-cost start. If online sales become your main business, compare it with Shopify or BigCommerce for deeper catalog, shipping and marketing tools. Square prices here are from our September 27, 2026 check.

Which one should you choose?

  • Online sales are the business and you plan to grow: Shopify.
  • You want more built in and fewer apps, and your sales are predictable: BigCommerce Growth.
  • Your brand and photography do the selling: Squarespace Core.
  • You need a shop plus bookings, services or events on one site: Wix Core or Business.
  • You sell in person on Square and want a free online store: Square Online.

Before you commit, add up the monthly plan, card processing on your expected sales, any transaction fee and the apps you will need. That total, not the headline price, is the number to compare.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best ecommerce website builder for a small business?

Shopify is the best all-round choice for a store that plans to grow, with a large app ecosystem and its own email app for cart recovery. BigCommerce suits stores that want many built-in features and no transaction fee with its embedded payment providers. Squarespace and Wix are better when the site is as much about the brand as the shop.

Which ecommerce platform has no transaction fees?

Most charge none if you use their own payments. Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee (2% on Basic) only when you use an outside payment provider. BigCommerce charges no fee on orders through its embedded payment providers and 2% on Core for other providers. Squarespace charges 2% on its Basic plan and 0% from Core up. Card processing fees apply everywhere.

How much does an ecommerce website cost per month?

Expect $16 to $105 a month for the platform, plus card processing. Squarespace starts at $16 a month billed annually, Wix Core at $29 billed annually, Shopify Basic at $29 billed yearly, and BigCommerce Core at $39. Square Online has a free plan where you pay only processing fees.

Does BigCommerce limit how much I can sell?

Yes. BigCommerce plans have sales thresholds based on trailing 12-month GMV: Core up to $30,000 and Growth up to $100,000. When you pass the threshold, your plan upgrades automatically. Scale covers $33,333 a month in GMV with a 0.9% rate above that.
